Retirement Living Survey

We are excited to announce we are launching our 2024 Retirement Living Survey in partnership with DCM research. The survey collection will start from this month with reporting and analysis released in March 2025.

The StewartBrown Retirement Living Survey (RLS) collects operational, sales, resident contract structures, resident demographic, and financial data on an annual basis, giving retirement living operators the ability to evaluate and assess their data to provide invaluable insights into the trends of key retirement living metrics at sector level, operator level and individual village/community level. In partnership with DCM Research, StewartBrown aims to also survey resident satisfaction as apart of it’s offering to retirement living operators.

The survey is available for participation by ALL providers of retirement living, independent living, assisted living/serviced apartments, senior's housing, seniors social housing and land lease communities.

What data is StewartBrown collecting?

The Retirement Living Survey will use proven systems and processes already established in Stewartbrown’s renowned Aged Care Financial Performance Survey. The Aged Care Financial Performance Survey is the largest and most highly regarded financial benchmark in the health and aged care sector, with quarterly participation comprising over 330 organisations, more than 1,200 residential aged care homes and over 70,000 home care packages.

The survey is designed to collect information from Retirement Living operators on:

  • All key aspects of Retirement Living from Independent Living, Assisted Living/Serviced Apartments, Land Lease communities, Senior Rental, and Seniors Social Housing
  • Organisation activity and service mix
  • Aged Care service mix
  • Resident contract structures
  • Resident demographics
  • Entry/ingoing contribution prices and sales
  • Village services and amenities
  • Care services provided within villages
  • Recurrent service charges
  • Key village operating income and expenditure items
  • Village development plans
  • Renovation/refurbishment and unit reinstatement cost
  • Resident satisfaction level and net promoter scores

Stewartbrown’s role is that of an independent third party to collect, cleanse, analyse and report the data. StewartBrown is not an advocate for any stakeholder in the sector.

Why Participate in the Retirement Living Survey?

Purposed to provide invaluable insights into the trends of key retirement living metrics at sector level, provider level and individual village level; and to evaluate your village key performance metrics against sector comparators.

The survey will provide evidence-based, objective analysis and accurate data to improve sector transparency and knowledge to key stakeholders. This will improve the ability for data-supported advocacy based on a national coverage of operators.

Each survey participant receives the annual Retirement Living Performance Report, with detailed analysis of trends, succinct summary tables and clear graphs only available to survey participants; and a tailored individual participant report for each retirement living operator and individual village analysing the key metrics against sector comparators.

Participants receive access to the StewartBrown professional Analyst Team, individualised Board and Executive presentations about the survey results, and privileged access to customed reporting and business intelligence (BI) on our secure Retirement Living Survey portal.

It is Stewartbrown’s intention to publish the sector reports publicly (like its Aged Care Financial Performance Survey). It is anticipated that this initiative will help improve transparency in the sector and minimise negative media surrounding retirement living sector which is poorly understood by many of the mainstream media outlets.
